Filippine, la rivolta del riso
Manila-Filippine

MANILA, Philippines -- Citing the national food summit as a "useless"
move to solve the looming rice crisis in the country, the Kilusang
Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) pushed, instead, for the abolition of the rice cartel and the approval of House Bill 3059 or the genuine agrarian reform bill.
"Walang kuwenta ang food summit dahil hindi ito ang solusyon sa krisis ng bigas [The food summit is useless because this is not the solution
to the rice crisis]," Ka Tonying Flores, auditor of KMP, said Friday.
KMP gathered around 100 people, mostly farmers, and marched from the Department of Agriculture (DA) along the Elliptical Road to the
National Food Authority (NFA)-NCR warehouse in Visayas Avenue, Quezon City.
"Isang public relations lang na palabas ang food summit. Ang kailangan ay konkretong solusyon [The food summit is a mere show of public elations. What is needed is a concrete solution]," said Ka Paeng Mariano, KMP chairman.
KMP also protested the increasing rice prices.
Flores said that farmers would sell rice to the government for just
P10 a kilo while the government would sell them for P18.25. "Ang laki
ng patong nila, hindi makatarungan [Their profit is too big. It is
unjust]," Flores said.
Flores also said that the fertilizer scam was the source of all these
problems. "Nawala yung P728 million na ginamit lang sa korupsyon [The P728 million was lost only to corruption]" he said.
House Bill 3059 would be the best solution for the rice crisis, the
KMP said. It also cited the need to increase funding for farmers for
crop development.
The KMP also protested Arroyo’s Ginintuang Masagana Ani and the use of genetically modified rice and BT corn.
"Oo nga wala pang nakikitang masamang epekto sa ngayon. Pero
hihintayin pa ba nating may mamatay o magkasakit [It is true that we still do not see the bad effects for now. But do we have to wait for
people to die or get sick]?" Flores said.
The KMP is calling on the DA to:
- moderate rice prices in the market;
- stop crop conversion;
- junk the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Act (AFMA);
- junk the world trade organization; and
- dismantle the rice carte
